How this calculator works
The RIT Internal Calculator uses the standard formula prescribed by Anna University and followed by Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology. The final internal mark is out of 40 for theory subjects.
- CAT 1 (50 marks): Converted to 12 marks (Multiply by 0.24)
- CAT 2 (25 or 50 marks): Converted to 6 or 12 marks
- CAT 3 (50 marks): Converted to 12 marks
- Assignments: Typically 5 assignments converted to 4 marks total.

Example Calculations
Example 1: The Average Scorer
Inputs: CAT1=35/50, CAT2=18/25, CAT3=40/50, Assignments=8/10 average.
Result: (35*0.24) + (18*0.24) + (40*0.24) + (8/10*4) = 8.4 + 4.32 + 9.6 + 3.2 = 25.52 / 40. You safely clear the 20/40 minimum mark!
Example 2: The Borderline Case
Inputs: CAT1=20/50, CAT2=12/25, CAT3=25/50, Assignments=6/10 average.
Result: 4.8 + 2.88 + 6.0 + 2.4 = 16.08 / 40. Since this is low, you will need to score much higher (around 68/100) in the end-semester exam to pass.
Example 3: Missing a Test
Inputs: CAT1=40/50, CAT2=0/25 (Absent), CAT3=42/50, Assignments=9/10 average.
Result: 9.6 + 0 + 10.08 + 3.6 = 23.28 / 40. A strong performance in other tests saves the internal grade.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum internal mark required to pass?
There is usually no hard minimum internal mark to write the exam, but having less than 20/40 means you must score significantly higher in the university exam to reach the 50% combined pass criteria.
Does attendance affect internal marks?
Yes, indirectly. If you don't meet the 75% attendance requirement, you may be barred from the university exams, rendering your internal marks moot.
How are internals converted into final university marks?
Under the 40/60 system, your internals are out of 40. Your university exam (out of 100) is converted to 60. The sum of these two must be 50 or above, with a minimum of 45/100 in the university exam.
What happens if I miss one CAT exam?
If you miss a CAT without a valid medical reason, you usually get 0 for that test, which lowers your total internal average. Sometimes a re-test is offered for valid cases.
